Award

NicholasGreenNAGC Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award

Maine Educators of the Gifted and Talented (MEGAT) in conjunction with the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting nominations for the NAGC Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award for the 2007-2008 school year.  The award, a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and Certificate of Excellence, is designed to recognize excellence in our children.  It is awarded by the national Association for Gifted Children to one student in each state who has shown distinction in visual or performing arts, academic achievement, or leadership, and who is enrolled in grades three, four, five or six during the 2007-2008 school year.

The award program was established through funds provided by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994.  The Greens paired with NAGC to start the Distinguished Student Awards because they wanted to recognize young people who are working hard to make the most of their lives and develop their unique gifts and talents, and who are now about the age that Nicholas was when he died.  NAGC and MEGAT are honored to be part of the Green’s generous spirit.  We look forward to seeing Nicholas’ legacy benefit young students who demonstrate excellence in areas of endeavor

Self-nominations and nominations from parents, teachers, students, and community and civic groups will be accepted.  All nomination packets must be complete at the time of submission and include the following:

  1. A composition written by the student nominee, not to exceed 750 words.  The composition should describe (A) the activity or interest area for which the student is being nominated, (B) how the student became interested/involved in the activity, (C) what impact the activity has had on the student and on others, (D) and how the student’s future plans and goals have been affected by this activity or interest area.  Students may also submit evidence associated with his/her participation in this activity. (submitted items will not be returned)
  2. A completed Application Form
  3. A letter of recommendation from someone other than a nominee’s family member explaining why the students is deserving of the award, what sets him or her apart from other students, and how the nominee is impacting others.
